As Christians, every part of our life is meant to be connected to our faith. Like Acts 17:28 (ESV) says, “In him we live and move and have our being.” Everything flows from this source, yet our finances are often disconnected from our faith. The majority of people purely view finances from a transactional perspective, but God has a much larger purpose for your money. You can use your transactional money for transformational purposes. Kingdom impact investing is a way to earn a financial and spiritual return.

What is Kingdom Impact Investing?

According to the Global Impact Investing Network, impact investing is investing done with the intention to generate positive, measurable social and environmental impact alongside a financial return. Kingdom impact investing is similar. The goal is to create a positive and quantifiable Kingdom impact and a financial return for the investor as well.

In her book Be Fruitful and Multiply: Why Economics is Necessary for Making God Pleasing Decisions, Anne Bradley writes:

“We are called to be profit-maximizers, which is the goal of stewardship. We have limited time, limited talent, and limited treasure. We are asked to use these gifts with their limitations to the fullest, and when we do that well, we have more leftovers (profit). The more time, talent, and treasure that is left over, the more we can serve others and fulfill God’s desires for us.”

Kingdom impact investing is a way to use your limited dollars for maximum impact. You can use your treasure to serve others. Then, you can continue the cycle of good by reinvesting the return you made on your initial investment.

Examples of How to Build Wealth Through Kingdom Impact Investing

We created a Kingdom impact investing company called Tricord Global, where we use transactional money for transformational purposes. Here is how it works:

Rather than investing in a stock like Apple, for example, people come to Tricord to invest their money in microfinance loans for entrepreneurs and church planters in developing countries.

Investors make a 4 to 8 percent return on their money, and Tricord Global makes about 12 percent. (That 4 percent goes to operate Tricord Global.) Investors can either give away the return or continue to invest it. Through this system, we have raised millions of dollars for microfinance.

Most people don’t understand that people in developing nations have little to no access to capital. For those who do, interest rates are often so high that they cannot repay the loan. VP of Tricord, David Briggs, explains that large corporations often suck the capital out of the markets, leaving small to medium enterprises without much to work with. He says, “These people are entrepreneurial. They want to affect business, but they have no access to capital. That’s what we call a target-rich environment.”

So, as a solution, Tricord Global provides microfinance loans at low interest rates so people can start businesses, farms, or other wealth building enterprises. It is the difference between giving someone a fish and teaching them how to fish.

Rather than receiving a donation and spending the donation, people who receive Tricord loans learn how to use the money to make more money. When money comes to them in the future, it won’t fall through their hands because they know how to leverage it to make more money.

As you can see, Kingdom impact investing produces a bigger, more sustainable impact than pure philanthropy. It’s a method we can apply as believers to take care of the poor AND reduce the circumstances that cause poverty in the first place.
