What do you do if you have a dream in your heart and a purpose God has outlined for you, but you are afraid to make the jump? Fear has a natural way of creeping into our lives, especially in the areas we really care about. However, when we experience fear, our job as believers is to cast it out and replace it with the Word of God.

Second Timothy 1:7 says, “God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and love and of a sound mind.”

Whereas your flesh may fear, your spirit is full of power, love, and a sound mind! As author, motivational speaker, corporate trainer, and entrepreneur Jack Canfield said, “Everything you want is on the other side of fear.” Actor Will Smith put it this way, “God placed the best things in life on the other side of terror.”

To advance in your wealth building journey, you will have to get used to moving past fear. So, here are three steps for how to get over fear:

1. Change your mindset on failure

2. Never make a decision out of fear

3. Go touch your dream

Applying these steps gives you the courage to fund, further, and fulfill your God-given dreams!

3 Steps for How to Get Over Fear

1. Change Your Mindset on Failure

If you can get to the other side of fear and past all the things holding you back, then you will find the opportunity to do what I call failing forward. You will experience noble failure, pick yourself up, and then learn to succeed.

People of all ages have asked me how to get started in business, but most have played it safe their whole lives. As you get older, learning how to take risks becomes harder. Now, when I say risks, I’m not talking about being stupid–especially if you’re later in life like me. Always act in wisdom.

If you’re young, I especially want you to read this carefully. When I was 28, a Christian psychologist gave me life-changing advice. I told this man I wanted to do x, y, and z. He was a prominent figure on Christian television back then, so he caught me off guard with his response. He said, “Billy, what’s the worst thing that can happen?”

“Well, that’s easy. The worst thing that can happen is that I can fail.”

“Exactly!” he said. That’s the worst thing that can happen. You’re only 28 years old and have many years ahead of you if you need to pick yourself up and start over again.”

Around that same time, my mentor told me he filed for bankruptcy three times before becoming a success. And he was a wealthy man! The point is, to start a business, build wealth, or reach the places God is calling you to go, you must be willing to take risks. You must follow your God-given purpose, so don’t be afraid to fail

2. Never Make a Decision Out of Fear

There are two sides to this coin: Do not make a decision out of fear, and don’t not make a decision out of fear. Whether it’s a small decision, such as how to spend your evening, or a big decision, like what step to take next in your career, do not succumb to the fear of missing out. In other words, don’t take an opportunity just because you’re afraid of what might happen (or not happen) if you don’t.

Psalm 37:23-24 (NLT) says,

“The Lord directs the steps of the godly.

He delights in every detail of their lives.

Though they stumble, they will never fall,

for the Lord holds them by the hand.”

God will direct your steps and hold your life together. If you are experiencing fear during a decision-making time, analyze your fear in prayer. Ask the Holy Spirit to give you a spirit of power, of love, and of a sound mind. Learning how to distinguish your fears from the Holy Spirit’s stop sign is important. Do not give your fears more merit than they deserve.

3. Take a Step Toward Your Dream

One of the mentors in my life always told me, “Go touch your dream.” In those days, he was talking about something physical or material, like a certain kind of car or house. He encouraged me to go and physically touch the things I wanted, whether that meant going to a particular store or visiting an open house.

Get around places and people that inspire your imagination of what’s possible. Touching your dream could look like getting coffee with someone who has achieved the goals you aspire to or visiting a state you hope to live in one day.

Whenever you touch your dream, you add color to your mental image of your future. This builds your faith and shows you that the joy of attaining your dream is bigger than the fear that tries to hold you back!
