In today’s busy world, it’s tempting to get caught up in chaos. Amidst the hustle and bustle, it can be too easy to let priorities slip and your wealth building goals to get off track. If you are feeling the pressure and want to know how to get your life in order, this blog is for you!

Did you know that one of God’s defining characteristics is that He brings chaos into order?

Check out the state of the universe before God got His hands on it in Genesis 1:2:

“The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters.”

Then, with the Word of His command, He started to clear the chaos.

Genesis 1:3 continues, “Then God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.”

God turned formless, empty darkness into intricate, beautiful creation. So, He can help you clear the chaos and order your life, too. Many people’s lives are not out of order because they’re lazy– quite the opposite. Instead, they get behind because they try to be perfectionists.

Here’s the secret sauce: aim for order, not perfection.

Order vs. Perfection: What’s the Big Difference?

A perfectionist is obsessed with being flawless. They can get so caught up in the details that they can forget the big picture. Perfectionism tends to lead to stress, which can lead to procrastination. Everything seems like it takes too much effort. Plus, perfectionism comes with a spirit of control. When you’re trying so hard to be perfect, life becomes about you– not a partnership with God.

Order, on the other hand, involves being organized around a set of priorities. Someone who has order in their life is not overly distracted. As Christians, everything starts with ordering our lives around God. Like planets in orbit, when we position ourselves around God, everything else seems to fall into place.

Now, the question is how to get your life in order. Here are 5 main areas to start with (in no particular order):

1. Faith

2. Feelings

3. Finances

4. Friends

5. Family

How to Get Your Life in Order: 5 Main Areas to Focus On

1. Faith

“Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.” Matthew 6:33, NLT

Like we mentioned above, your faith should direct everything you do. Like anything meaningful, you have to prioritize it. Create the space and schedule dedicated times with the Lord. Do you have a daily prayer rhythm? Are you reading your Bible consistently? Do you keep the Sabbath? Seek God and find a consistent rhythm to connect with Him daily.

2. Feelings

“A fool vents all his feelings, But a wise man holds them back.” Proverbs 29:11, NKJV

I’ve heard it said that emotions are like kids. You don’t want to kick them out of the car, but you certainly don’t want to let them drive, either! Our feelings are like an alarm system. They clue us in on what’s going right and what’s going wrong. However, they should not control our lives. We must learn how to order and control them.

Ask yourself: Are you emotionally consistent, or do you have a lot of up-and-down days? Do your feelings negatively affect your ability to get along with others? If you need help to know how to order your life in the feelings department, meeting with a Christian counselor could be a great first step. Reaching your financial and career goals will be more difficult if you’re having a hard time handling chaotic emotions!

3. Finances

“No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.” Matthew 6:24, NIV

Financial chaos is something that can turn your life on its head really quickly. So, getting and maintaining order in your finances should be a priority! As the verse above says, God does not want money to master us– we have to master it. Here are some quick ideas:

  • If you’re stuck in consumer debt, pay it down as quick as possible using this method
  • Create (and stick to) a budget
  • Have monthly meetings (with your spouse if you’re married) to go over your budget, wealth building goals, and upcoming expenses
  • Automate savings
  • Tithe and consistently ask God for guidance on how to give
  • Monitor your investments on a quarterly basis at minimum

In addition, ask yourself the following questions: Am I overly distracted? Do I need financial help often? Or, on the opposite side of the spectrum, am I so focused on making money that I don’t have time for God?

4. Friends

“As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend.” Proverbs 27:17, NLT

As Jim Rohn once said, “You’re the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” Who we surround ourselves with is extremely important. In any given season, God will bring the right people to our lives and take the wrong people away, but we must be willing to submit to His voice. Also, remember that your time is valuable. Knowing which relationships to prioritize will help you guard your time and manage your schedule.

Ask yourself: Do your friends lead you toward God’s best for your life or away from it?

5. Family

“Look at how good and pleasing it is when families live together as one.” Psalm 133:1, CEBA

I probably don’t have to tell you that disorder in a household is the source for disorder everywhere else. Regardless of your role in the family, work to keep the peace. If you’re a spouse or parent, develop systems to help your household activities run smoothly. For example: When and who does what chores? When is the budget addressed? When is scheduled family time? What are the family rules? If you are a parent, consistency is one of the best gifts you can give to your children.

Ask yourself: Is there harmony in my household and among my family members? Are my spouse and I on the same page about the vision and goals for our family?
