touch your dream

When you imagine your life 5, 10, or 15 years from now, what do you see?

What kind of legacy do you want to leave behind for your family, community, and world?

These are big questions, but they are worthy ones.

Genesis 1:27 is a reminder that you are created in the image of a God who spoke the universe into existence. Just as He transformed chaos into order and darkness into light, you carry the power to dream and create. But how do you bridge the gap between dreaming and living out the extraordinary vision God has for your life?

I unpack this question and more in my free e-book, Touch Your Dream: How to Find, Follow, and Fulfill God’s Dreams for Your Life. Click here to download your free copy and learn how to:

  • Discover and connect with God’s vision for your life.
  • Take practical steps to touch your dream and move forward in faith.
  • Overcome limiting beliefs and strongholds that keep you from God’s best.
  • Write your vision down and stay motivated even when setbacks arise.

How to Touch Your Dream

Touching your dream involves connecting the vision you see in your mind’s eye with a tangible experience.

Proverbs 16:9 says, “A man’s mind plans his way, but it is the Lord that directs his steps.” You can’t turn a ship unless it’s moving. So, one of the best things you can do is move in the direction you believe God is leading you to go. You can’t change your destination overnight, but you can change your direction. Touching your dream means taking the next step in the direction of your dream.

Oftentimes, touching your dream takes the shape of experiencing something you have never experienced before. Hosea 4:6 says, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.” I like to say it this way: you don’t know what you don’t know.

Touching your dream gives you fresh insight so you know the right questions to ask. It involves getting outside your current environment to gain a new perspective on what is possible. The rest of this blog focuses on four practices you can implement to touch your dream and take the next step towards God’s purposes for your life.

dreaming with God

1. Replace Limiting Beliefs

One of the biggest challenges in dreaming with God is taking the limits off. You will not be able to touch your dream if a limiting belief is keeping you from dreaming in the first place!

A limiting belief is any belief that keeps your hope, faith, and passion small. They can sound like

  • I can’t achieve x, y, z
  • I don’t deserve to dream
  • ____ is not possible

One of the best antidotes to limiting beliefs is renewing your mind to scripture.

Romans 12:2 says, “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”

So, here’s how you renew your mind:

  1. Pray and ask God to reveal any limiting beliefs.
  2. Find a scripture that counters that belief with God’s Word.
  3. Every time that limiting belief comes up in your heart and mind, exchange it biblical truth and promises.

The Bible also talks about limiting beliefs as strongholds.

2 Corinthians 10:4-5 says:

“For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.”

The word stronghold translates as follows:

  • A castle, fortress, fastness
  • Anything on which one relies

Strongholds aren’t just demonic things in The Heavenlies—in a sense, it would be easier to detach ourselves from those things. Nobody wants a demon on their back! Instead, strongholds are castles we build in our minds brick by brick and wrong belief by wrong belief. They keep the truth from getting into our minds and hearts. Strongholds are formed and reinforced when we lean on human reasoning rather than Godly wisdom. They are anything we have come to rely on other than God, such as material comforts or our abilities.

Dreaming with God requires demolishing strongholds. After all, it’s called dreaming with God for a reason—he doesn’t want us to rely on anything other than Him. We must learn how to destroy strongholds to receive His vision and follow it obediently.

2. Get a Bigger Vision

Once you identify and start to reject limiting beliefs, you will be in a position to receive a bigger vision from God. Our vision is always smaller than God’s vision. Businessman and WealthBuilders speaker Colin Carr often says, “The nature of God is increase.”

God’s purposes for you do not exist in a vacuum—they are connected to the larger purpose and intent of God’s work in the world. When Esther came and stood before the king in the nation of Israel her uncle, Mordecai, said, “Esther, who knows if you’ve come to the kingdom for such a time as this?” (Esther 4:4) In other words, Esther had a purpose, but her purpose was connected to God’s plans to redeem Israel from persecution.

Most of us truly underestimate what God has called us to do. We think way smaller than God does. So, we must get a revelation of His plans and purposes for our lives. The main way we discover that is from His revealed will in scripture. The Holy Spirit will speak to you and through others as well, but it always has to align with scripture.

Getting a bigger vision involves getting outside of ourselves—not only what we think is possible, but also what we think we want. As we bridge out of our comfort zone, we have no choice but to exercise our faith. That’s really what dreaming with God is all about. At the end of the day, He is our dream. Dreaming is a way to connect and partner with God, all the while growing your relationship with Him.

3. Explore

As Ecclesiastes 1:9 says, there is no new thing under the sun. So, a version of your dream probably exists somewhere in the world. Most likely, there are people in your own backyard who are living a version of your dream. So, a fun way to touch your dream is to explore places and spaces that spark your creativity and add fuel to your vision.

  • If you dream about opening a business, visit businesses that are like the one you want to open.
  • If you want to invest in commercial real estate, visit buildings that spark your creativity and cause you to be inspired.
  • If your goal is to start a ministry, volunteer, give, and connect with ministries who are doing similar work.

You get the idea—the key is to let your curiosity lead you into exploring people who have already done a degree of what you want to do. Then, and only then, will you be able to start answering the question that will really bring your vision to reality:

What do I need to become to do all that God wants me to do?

Before you explore and touch your dream, you stay in a state of not knowing. So, never let it be said that you didn’t find out!

 4. Attend Conferences and Events

Get around people who have already been where you want to go. Find a mentor, attend conferences, and connect with people who have a kingdom mindset. We go faster and further together. It’s like Canadian geese who migrate south for the winter. They can travel as far as 1,500 miles in just 24 hours because every member of this 30-100 goose group takes turns flying at the front. This helps them conserve energy, go faster, and protect one another.

At WealthBuilders, we host an annual conference, multiple hands-on workshops, webinars, and other events throughout the year. Check out our events page to learn more about how you can get involved.
