Throughout the Old Testament, we read about God’s promise to give His people a Savior. This Messiah would be a king whose “kingdom would have no end” and where “everyone will live in peace and prosperity.” (Luke 1:33, Micah 4:4) During His rule, “nation will no longer fight against nation,” and “the lion will lay down with the lamb.” (Isaiah 2:4, 11:6)

Cue Jesus.

When He comes on the scene, everything changes. He says things like, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.” (Mark 1:15)

Old Testament Bible Verses on The Kingdom of God

The Kingdom of God was prophesied throughout the Old Testament, and the Jews eagerly waited for the Messiah who would reign and rule as King. Here are seven Bible verses on the Kingdom of God from the Old Testament to give you an idea of what Jesus came to fulfill (unless otherwise stated, verses are from the NKJV version):

1. Psalm 2:6-8 (NLT)

“For the Lord declares, “I have placed my chosen king on the throne in Jerusalem, on my holy mountain.” The King proclaims the Lord’s decree: “The Lord said to me, ‘You are my son. Today I have become your Father. Only ask, and I will give you the nations as your inheritance, the whole earth as your possession.”

2. Isaiah 11:9-10 (NLT)

“Nothing will hurt or destroy in all my holy mountain, for as the waters fill the sea, so the earth will be filled with people who know the Lord. In that day the heir to David’s throne will be a banner of salvation to all the world. The nations will rally to him, and the land where he lives will be a glorious place.”

3. Micah 4:1-4 (NLT)

“In the last days, the mountain of the Lord’s house will be the highest of all–the most important place on earth. It will be raised above the other hills, and people from all over the world will stream there to worship.

People from many nations will come and say, “Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of Jacob’s God. There he will teach us his ways, and we will walk in his paths.” For the Lord’s teaching will go out from Zion; his word will go out from Jerusalem.

The Lord will mediate between peoples and will settle disputes between strong nations far away. They will hammer their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation will no longer fight against nation, nor train for war anymore.

Everyone will live in peace and prosperity, enjoying their own grapevines and fig trees, for there will be nothing to fear. The Lord of Heaven’s Armies has made this promise!”

4. Jeremiah 23:5

“Behold, the days are coming,” says the LORD,
“That I will raise to David a Branch of righteousness;
A King shall reign and prosper,
And execute judgment and righteousness in the earth.”

5. Daniel 2:44

“And in the days of these kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom which shall never be destroyed; and the kingdom shall not be left to other people; it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand forever.”

6. Daniel 7:14

“Then to Him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom,
That all peoples, nations, and languages should serve Him.
His dominion is an everlasting dominion,
Which shall not pass away,
And His kingdom the one
Which shall not be destroyed.”

7. Daniel 7:27

“Then the kingdom and dominion,
And the greatness of the kingdoms under the whole heaven,
Shall be given to the people, the saints of the Most High.
His kingdom is an everlasting kingdom,
And all dominions shall serve and obey Him.”
