How would you live if you held the key to understanding all of Jesus’s teachings? According to Jesus, The Parable of the Sower holds exactly that—the insight needed to unlock every other lesson He shared. This story is not about ancient farming methods. Instead, it’s a powerful guide for how we can steward our lives today.

Typically, when people teach the Parable of the Sower, it is from the direct angle that Jesus expands on later in the chapter: the sower sows the Word of God, and as people hear it, the type of heart they have determines how the Word is received and its effectiveness. I love this angle! However, as with all truth in the Word of God, it’s layered and rich. There are so many lessons we can pull out of every one of Jesus’ words.

In this blog, I want to focus on the sower’s resilience rather than the seeds and the soil. First, let’s take a look at The Parable of the Sower in the Amplified Classic Version:

The Parable of the Sower

Mark 4:3-8 says,

“Give attention to this! Behold, a sower went out to sow.

And as he was sowing, some seed fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up.

Other seed [of the same kind] fell on ground full of rocks, where it had not much soil; and at once it sprang up, because it had no depth of soil;

And when the sun came up, it was scorched, and because it had not taken root, it withered away.

Other seed [of the same kind] fell among thorn plants, and the thistles grew and pressed together and utterly choked and suffocated it, and it yielded no grain.

And other seed [of the same kind] fell into good (well-adapted) soil and brought forth grain, growing up and increasing, and yielded up to thirty times as much, and sixty times as much, and even a hundred times as much as had been sown.”

People often don’t talk about the sower’s incredible resilience. The birds ate some of his seed, but he kept sowing. The sun scorched some of his seed, and he kept sowing. The thorns choked some of his seed, yet he kept sowing. On his fourth try, the seeds fell on good soil and multiplied by a hundredfold! That’s not double, by the way. That’s one hundred crops for every seed!

Whenever we do things with a Kingdom purpose, we will experience disappointment. The people we lead and disciple will disappoint us. We will try some investments or business endeavors that don’t pan out. Anybody who has done real business and worked with real money and says they have never had difficult times or challenges is lying. That doesn’t mean that we abandon the vision God has given us. We are called to be faithful and obedient for the long haul. If we chase the birds, we leave the field. If we get stuck in the thorns, we won’t make it to the well-adapted soil.

With that, here are three things you can sow into as work towards your God-given vision.

The Parable of the Sower: 3 Things to Sow into on Your Wealth Building Journey

1. Sow Into Yourself

The first thing we see in The Parable of the Sower is that the sower went out to sow. He left the comfort of his home to do a task with uncertain results.

Many times, we are not willing to go out even when the Holy Spirit is stirring us about what to do next in our lives. Every one of us is called to be a sower in the kingdom of God for His plans and purposes.

God is no respecter of persons (Acts 10:34). He has given us all “seeds of the same kind” in the forms of giftings, callings, purposes, aspirations, and abilities. They look different for each one of us, but the point is that we all have something to sow.

As Christians, we never arrive. Do not underestimate what God has called you to do or who God has called you to become.

So, the first thing you need to sow into is yourself. In other words, the first thing you should invest in is yourself. No matter how old or experienced you are, you should always pursue learning and growth.

Ask yourself: what seeds do I have in my hand? How can I step out in faith to plant them?

2. Sow Into One Another

We need each other to reach what God has called us to do and who God has called us to be. I like to say it this way– you are never going to get there by yourself.

Charlie Jones said, “You will be the same person in five years as you are today except for the books you read and the people you meet.” In other words, how you sow into yourself and how you sow into others makes all the difference.

Proverbs 27:17 says, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” The inverse is also true. You can become more dull or sharper depending on the company you keep.

So, be careful about who you are around and what they are doing to you. You get pulled up or down by association.  So, sow into relationships with people who have a Kingdom perspective and think bigger than you do.

3. Sow Into Your Dream

The third thing you need to sow into is your dream. One way to do this is to touch your dream. If there is something you feel like God is asking you to do, make a plan to discover it. Remember, in the Parable of the Sower, the sower planted seeds even though the results were uncertain. He walked the field and got some dirt on his hands.

Perhaps you want to start a certain kind of business or ministry. Touching your dream looks like visiting a business or ministry that does similar work. Or, maybe you dream about investing in a certain plot of land or stretch of commercial buildings. If that’s the case, go step on similar ground, and touch similar buildings! See what the dream is like, and let the Holy Spirit speak to you about it when you are there.

The goal of sowing into your dream is expanding your paradigm of what’s possible. As you take steps of faith in the direction of your dream, God will open doors and reveal the next step!

It’s important to note that sowing into a God dream will always involve bringing people into the Kingdom of God. As we sow the Word of God in our respective areas, we will be fruitful and multiply, and the Kingdom will spread!
