Being a small business owner is no small feat. Actually, a better description than a small business owner would be a beginner business owner. Truly, there is nothing small about the faith, dedication, commitment, and hard work required to start a business. A beginner business owner often bears the full weight of responsibility, not because the business is small but because it is too early in the game for a team. You have some unique struggles and some particular needs associated with your decision to start a business.
If you are running a small business or are working toward starting one, here are some Bible verses to encourage you. There will be days when all is well and everything is running smoothly. There will also be days when you need a reminder of God’s grace and a boost to your faith.
Bible Verses for Small Business Owners
1. ‘Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.’ (Joshua 1:9 NKJV)
God is with you Wherever you go—how reassuring is that! Whether you are leading a small business team of one or five, the assurance that God’s presence is with you wherever you go means wherever, whatever, whoever, and however you are fighting for your business. Fear and confusion are overtaken by strength and courage when the Lord is in command. Be strong and courageous!
2. ‘John answered and said, “A man can receive nothing unless it has been given to him from heaven. ‘ (John 3:27 NKJV)
A business plan from the Lord is the best way to walk confidently through the struggles you will encounter as a small business owner. The Lord is a giver of good gifts and the lover of your soul, therefore anything the Lord has given you will flourish and bear fruit. God wants to be your business partner, so take the opportunity! He has more resources, wisdom, and connections than anyone you could want as a partner. Without Him there is nothing, but with Him there is life.

3. ‘Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.’ (Hebrews 4:16 NKJV)
As a small business owner, it is not likely that you are timid or reserved in the business world. It is more probable that you are decisive and motivated where business matters are concerned. On the days when grace and mercy are needed, take your boldness to God’s throne and receive help for whatever situation may arise. Practice making BOLD requests of the Lord.
4. ‘He gives power to the weak, And to those who have no might He increases strength. Even the youths shall faint and be weary, And the young men shall utterly fall, But those who wait on the Lord Shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint.’ (Isaiah 40:29-31 NKJV)
I don’t know about you, but I want to be one of those who wait on the Lord. No matter how you are feeling on any given day as a small business owner, there is victory and success through waiting on the Lord. You may be young (or new) in your field, you may feel weak in your resolve, or you may be about to quit, but the Lord promises you will fly, you will run, and you will walk with endurance when you wait on Him, seek Him, and follow Him.
5. ‘So we are convinced that every detail of our lives is continually woven together for good, for we are his lovers who have been called to fulfill his designed purpose.’ (Romans 8:28 TPT)
Every detail of our lives includes your standing as a small business owner. Those frustrating details that confound you are woven together with the joyful successes for your good and the good of your business. Whether you are investing in real estate or selling vintage light fixtures, God has a purpose for you and is invested in your success. He wants to be part of every detail, which means nothing is too big or too small to ask about. What a blessing!
6. ‘Show me Your ways, O Lord; Teach me Your paths. Lead me in Your truth and teach me, For You are the God of my salvation; On You I wait all the day.’ (Psalms 25:4-5 NKJV)
Talk about having the most amazing consultant on retainer. How many small business owners have a Mentor who knows the past, present, and future? You have His wisdom at your disposal, His power for the asking, and His love for you as the greatest motivation. The God of your salvation can teach you anything you need to know. Consult the Lord. Wait on His answer. Obey His voice. His way is the SURE way.
7. ‘There has never been the slightest doubt in my mind that the God who started this great work in you would keep at it and bring it to a flourishing finish on the very day Christ Jesus appears ‘ (Philippians 1:6 MSG)
You are not going to be left holding the bag. You began your journey as a small business owner by waiting on God and obeying His voice. God started the journey with you and He is going to see you through until the very end. He has started a work in you that includes your salvation, family, health, business, and every other part of you. God is committed to you for the long haul, so be encouraged. God wants to see you flourish, so remove any doubt in your mind that speaks otherwise.

8. ‘Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.’ (Romans 12:2 NLT)
The business practices found in the world should not be the final say in how you run your small business. Don’t adopt business systems contrary to the Word of God. Instead, let the Lord transform your way of thinking. Following God’s will for your business will bring about perfect results which only He can promise. God’s way of thinking is outside the world’s box and will reap benefits outside the boundaries of the norm. Be transformed!
9. ‘And everything I’ve taught you is so that the peace which is in me will be in you and will give you great confidence as you rest in me. For in this unbelieving world you will experience trouble and sorrows, but you must be courageous, for I have conquered the world! ‘ (John 16:33 TPT)
The peace of Jesus Christ is the most valuable tool in your small business owner’s toolbelt. There will be difficulties, conflicts, problems, and trouble, but Jesus gave you His peace and the ability to rest in the knowledge that He will conquer whatever comes. His peace cannot be explained, but it makes a difference during the all-or-nothing decision moments. Trust His peace.
10. ‘But it is good for me to draw near to God; I have put my trust in the Lord God, That I may declare all Your works.’ (Psalms 73:28 NKJV)
Give God a shout out when He shows His faithfulness in your business. Let those around you hear about His amazing wisdom and guidance. You are meant to make a difference in this life and in the life to come. Show those around you the value of trusting in a faithful God, and give the glory for your success to the One who gave you success.
Small business owner is a title to be proud of. You have worked hard, risked much, and given 110%. The journey to running and growing a successful small business is a complex one, full of mountains to climb and roads to pave, but also full of joy and the sense of a job well done. Stay focused, wait on the Lord, and be strong and courageous for the win!
